The National Football League announced on Monday that Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl LX halftime show. The performance is scheduled for February 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. This marks the first time the artist has taken the lead slot for the event.
Jay-Z’s booking stems from a 2019 agreement between his entertainment agency, Roc Nation, and the NFL. Under that deal, Roc Nation curates the talent for the league’s annual championship game. The arrangement includes a reported $25 million payment for the lineup curation. Jay-Z is the first act to leverage that agency contract to book his own performance.
The announcement follows a year of high-profile activity for the rapper. In March, he told GQ senior associate editor Frazier Tharpe that 2026 would be a year of offense. “We played enough defense, 2026 is all offense,” he said. He returned to using the umlauts in his stage name and released a reissue of his 1996 album Reasonable Doubt. The reissue was available exclusively at Target, a move that sparked debate during a grassroots boycott of the retailer.
Jay-Z responded to critics during a concert at Yankee Stadium. He performed an a cappella freestyle before playing “Politics As Usual.” “They say I sold out. Yeah, I did sell out. Three nights. I sold Yankee Stadium the hell out,” he rapped. He sold out the venue on three consecutive nights in the fall.
The artist has also been involved in legal proceedings this year. A civil lawsuit named Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs as co-defendants in rape allegations. Jay-Z denied the claims and filed a defamation and extortion suit against filing attorney Tony Buzbee. An appellate court recently dismissed that lawsuit. Combs, who also denied the allegations, was sentenced to more than four years in prison on unrelated prostitution-related charges.
New media projects have accompanied his tour. Jay-Z co-executive produced an eight-episode HBO documentary titled Jay-Z in 8. The series features deep listening sessions with former Def Jam founder Rick Rubin. Filmed in France, the documentary covers topics ranging from his father’s abandonment to his early hustling days. Jay-Z also addressed the concept of the “house Negro” in the final episode, criticizing figures who use community support for financial gain.
Critics and fans have offered mixed reactions to his continued prominence. Former hip-hop journalist Touré recently described Jay-Z as a figure used by powerful white institutions to quiet protests. Video essayist F.D Signifier categorized him as part of a “Black misleadership class.” Meanwhile, Jay-Z remains engaged in criminal justice reforms and maintains a minority ownership stake in the Brooklyn Nets.
The Super Bowl appearance concludes a cycle of career milestones for the artist. He will join a list of major musical acts that have performed at the halftime show. The event serves as the capstone for the NFL’s 2027 season, which concludes with the championship game at SoFi Stadium.
