New Mexico State University in Las Cruces confirmed two cases of New World screwworm on its campus and in the surrounding area of Doña Ana County. State animal health officials identified the infestation in a sheep on campus and a cow off campus. Both animals were found to be afflicted with the flesh-eating parasite, which is carried by flies that lay eggs in open wounds or orifices.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture dashboard tracking infestations showed that the two Doña Ana County cases were confirmed over the weekend. On Monday, authorities identified an additional case in cattle in Luna County. This latest development continues a resurgence of the parasite that reached the United States in June after being declared eradicated in 1966.

Dr. Samantha Holeck, the State Veterinarian for the New Mexico Livestock Board, stated that early detection is critical to protecting animal health. She encouraged the campus community to look for warning signs such as suspicious wounds or infestations. The state Department of Agriculture reported that surveillance and fly trapping by state and federal authorities are underway to determine if the parasite has spread to other animals.

The parasite feeds on living tissue and can cause serious damage or death if not treated promptly. Since the resurgence began in June, 66 cases have been confirmed in New Mexico. Of these, 13 were active as of Tuesday. The cases involve cattle, livestock, pets, and one instance in wildlife.

Animal owners are urged to monitor for wounds that do not heal, visible larvae, or odors. Livestock owners should report concerns to the New Mexico Livestock Board at 505-841-6161. Pet owners should contact a veterinarian. While human infestation is possible, no cases have been reported in the state, though prompt medical attention is required if symptoms appear.

When an infestation is confirmed, officials declare a 12.4-mile infested zone around the location. Animals moving in or out of this zone require inspections within five days. The New Mexico Department of Agriculture asked Doña Ana County residents to check the infestation zone map at ScrewwormNM.org to see if their property is affected.

Agriculture Secretary Jeff Witte said in a written statement that the state needs awareness and action from all residents. He urged the NMSU community and surrounding neighbors to stay vigilant and report concerns quickly to help contain the spread.
