Greenfield gets new legal office to help residents
A new public defender office opens in Greenfield to make legal services more accessible.

The southern part of Monterey County will have better access to legal resources with the opening of a new satellite office of the Public Defender in the Greenfield City Hall. The initiative aims to make legal services more accessible for those who currently have to travel to Salinas to get legal help. King City has a virtual court, but its services are limited, forcing many residents to travel about 30 minutes to resolve various legal matters.
The new office will offer guidance to connect users with lawyers and investigators, deliver legal documents, and learn about options to reduce or clear criminal records, when possible according to the law. The decision responds to needs identified in the community, especially among young people. This office is part of a plan to expand the resources and services available to the residents of the southern part of the county.
Initially, the service will be handled by the current staff of the Public Defender, with a lawyer available in person on Tuesdays. Authorities hope to expand the hours as demand increases. The office will start seeing clients next week and will be located inside the Greenfield City Hall, in the first door on the right when entering the building.
